A Rustic Thailand

Cable TV is supposed to bring the world to your living room without having to step out and spend expensive dollars to see the world. This purpose was achieved when I watched The Lonely Planet on Thailand but what cable TV couldn’t give me was the experience of being in Thailand itself. The air was humid with a laidback and rustic traditional lifestyle which is so different from Malaysia. People were still travelling around in “tuk-tuk” which is a different version of the trishaw and instead of a bicycle, it is motorcycle attached to a cart, which is used to move cart passengers around.

Culture and Lifestyle

The whole city is an oxymoron of cultures and lifestyle. The contrast is slightly unnerving to my pampered senses. Suddenly, I felt ashamed of my “taken for granted” lifestyle which I complained every now and then. People were so poor that little girls as young as my youngest sister were trying to sell themselves to white foreigners to earn that little bit of cash. Competition was so tough among the girls that prices to “buy” one of these girls became very low. Even pregnant women were trying to make a sale. I had to walk past these women who operate at roadside bars every night and it saddens me to see that tourists are actually encouraging this flesh trade. The bars are perpetually flocked with tourists. A very pathetic sight as tourists from developed country is using money for cheap thrills with these destitute women. The older ones show signs of weariness from engaging in this trade on long term basis while the younger ones have to grit their mouths and endure the weird and sadist requests from these tourists. This is only a close-up view of the culture.

In the background, high-rise buildings such as the biggest mall in South East Asia and posh buildings cater for the rich and elite. The malls have brands that even Singapore malls do not carry. One of the malls actually has retailers selling Ferraris, BMWs, Lamborghinis and Porsche. In this mall, people were dressed to the nines and carrying expensive bags while the people on the streets are still very much rooted in tradition and fashion is a luxury that cannot be afforded by the street people.

It was weird to see “tuk-tuks” amidst Toyota Vios and expensive Mercs. The road system is so undeveloped that traffic jams is a world-understood situation in Bangkok. Trying to negotiate the traffic is virtually impossible. To move that few meters take hours, people resorted to walking to save time. Pavements are cracked, tiles missing from the pavement, uneven pavements – these are just part of life in Bangkok.

Despite the prevalence of the poverty, people were comfortable with their lifestyle. The level of complacency amidst the community surprises me. Malls could display their wares without fears of petty thefts. Petty theft crimes is not a societal problem as compared to Malaysia. What makes the people behave this way? Malaysia has better educated people and higher income society yet the crime rate is higher. Theft is usually a crime of destitution yet Thais hold more pride and dignity than resorting to this.

Food

Local fare dots the street as women try to sell their produce to passer-bys. Fried insects, duck mee, beef noodles and pok-pok salad are commonly seen. I had wanted to try some of these foods but the hygiene level killed my appetite. Food sellers used bare hands to handle food and I doubt they clean their hands each time they handle something apart from food. Squatting by the roadside, putting the bare hands into baskets to pull out a handful of mee and washing the used bowls in basins of used water don’t appeal to my normally hygienic self. My stomach churned at the sight of the clogged drains by these vendors. I ended up not trying any street food.

Shopping

Having visited almost every mall in Bangkok, I could safely agree that shopping for variety in high-brands is a must for elites. I loved the white, clean and spacious design of the malls – conducive to my already ‘finely-tuned’ shopping instincts. However, I was not in Bangkok to shop for high-end brands, I was there for the al-cheapo produce. Having battled sweaty people on the streets and balancing on the uneven pavements, I finally had my chance to visit MBK and Patpong for these al-cheopo stuff. Sadly, the regular influx of tourists has already acclimatised the locals to the bargaining skills of these tourists. Thus, inflated prices make shopping a bit pricy. Much bargaining to bring down the price does not justify the effort taken purchase the item. Moroever, due to the limited time frame to shop, I couldn’t shop much.

Thailand, I will be back but for the cultural aspect. Looks like shopping for me will be in countries such as the Americas, Europe, Australia and not this cultural-rich country.

Christmas Dinner 2006 @ Sheesh Mahal

After watching A Night At The Museum, I have to declare that the movie is funny in a Ben Stiller way. Expected yet he makes you feel that it is unexpected. Who would have guess that wax statutes would have hearts of gold. Anyway, after the movie, we (me, Lian Khin, Mel, Daphnie, Mike and Joel) decided to take our Christmas Dinner at a Pakistani Restaurant, "Sheesh Mahal" which was Sheesh! This is not that mahal after all.

We had Palak Paneer (killer minced spinach with cottage cheese), Beef Vindaloo, Lamb Masala (I think), Almond Kulfi (ice-cream with spices), Gulab Jamon (which was too sweet for my taste - Mel loved this sweet dessert).

Jo - being his first time at a Pakistani food was kinda hesistant when food was served yet he plucked up the courage to take the first plunge (must be out of curiousity) and fell in love with the Palak Paneer immediately. It was funny to see Lian Khin and Joel enjoying the food. Must say it was a good and fun Christmas dinner. Jo was so "in" to his food that he pushed his glass and drink to my side (talk about liking the food - he ate so much that he couldn't stand straight).

Christmas Dinner on 23 Dec

That's Baby Marcus whom I have been trying and trying to seduce the whole night but unfortunately, he prefers the "hamster" aka Jerrica to me lor.

Happily, I wore a party dress to Elinor's house for a Christmas dinner, after work. Didn't expect to be one of the few rare cases who wore a party dress coz everyone was in work wear or casuals. Belot lah!

Worse case, this was a couple Christmas Dinner which made me feel VERY ODD coz I am the only one who didn't have a partner. Though I came with Shi Han - that doesn't count because he has a girlfriend. So malu-fying.

Anyway, had a fun time laughing at Mama Jo's animated jokes and stories. I tried to carry Mama Jo's son, Marcus SO MANY TIMES and the kid just keeps on rejecting me! It's like I have this word "STAY AWAY FROM THIS CRAZY WOMAN" on my forehead!

Touch down after running around Sexy Lai's house and Subang Parade to grab Mel's white blouse for Christmas' choir performance.

Got stuck to the TV to watch some bikini-clad assassins in a complicated story line of incest (this is a Hollywood movie and not some Chinese drama). Took loads of photos in the short 45 min of being there. Drank a can of coke only coz still too full from the earlier session of eating yummy crispy mushrooms, spaghetti meatballs, snowfish, roasted lamb and red wine at Auntie Yin's place.

Going to Thailand

I'm excited! I'm going go to Bangkok, Thailand for a 3D/2N business trip. Usually, business trips are boring but this one is superbly cool! I get 2D of free and easy shopping and only 1D of actually shopping research. My hours may be long and tiring in this line BUT I get to work in a shopping mall and what do I do? SHOP!!! Such a perfect job and ideal for me.

I haven't even researched where to shop when in Bangkok. Hopefully, my colleagues are shopaholics coz I have no idea where to shop there.

TEEN TITANS

Having lunch at the first Tony Roma's in Malaysia and the BBQ Chicken is superb! I wanted second helpings but was on an eternal diet to ensure that I do not bloat. Been binging a lot recently. Must be the hormones.

TEEN TITANS GO! I walked into the office happily wearing the new Crocs that Mak gave and someone had to comment, "Hei! You look like one of the Teen Titans character with those shoes". Probably, my colleagues are not used to seeing a more dressed-down me.

If you can't see our eyes - that's understandable because this was taken at 1.50am during the rehearsal. Poor Cyborg, he can't sit because his pampers will break if he sits.

Countdown Tag

10 FIRSTS

First Best Friend - Jamie
She was my best buddy since the day she stole my colour pencils in Primary 1. Gosh...I miss that gal now that she is a PR in Singapore.

First Screen Name - Rain
For some mad reason, I agreed to be a bitch in my friends' screen assignment I was supposed to be the 3rd party to some BGR.

First Pet Name - Kuay Teow
My primary school teachers can never figured out that my name was pronouced as Hoay-Theen and not Kuay-Theen...my friends ended up calling me Kuay Teow after they found out I like Kuay Teow.

First Piercing - Ear Lobes
Though this was done involuntarily, I became addicted to piercing and whoa-lah, next was navel piercing in 2001. My next aim - the flesh between my collar bone.

First Crush - Aaron Kwok
This has got to be my first and craziest crush. I even had a file on him ie, biodata, photos, posters, lyrics....all sorts until my mum calls him mushroom head.

First CD - Richard Marx's Ballads
I still have that CD till today and those songs are just so evergreen.

First School - Serene Kindergarten
This kindie has 2 swimming pools and a gym for the kids. Best part, I get to order what I want to eat everyday. Talk about starting to like luxury at a young age.

First Kiss
This is highly dangerous information which should remain classified.

First Car - Satria JEH 492

My grandma thought it was cool for me to learn to smoke at that age so my first ciggie was a classic maroon Dunhill.

Attended a meeting in HQ and was driven back in a Lexus

Last Bubble Bath I Took - Avillion, Port Dickson in August
This was so luxurious...Bubble baths are meant to pamper all 5 senses with the beauty of softness and well-being. Mine was a rose bubble bath (complete with the candles and soft yellow lighting). I think I fell asleep in the bath tub and woke up an hour later with prunes for skin.

You Listened To - Shakira's Illegal Featuring Carlos Santana
I've been listening to this song since 7pm till now so you can imagine, I broke my own record by listening to the same song for 4 hours.

DUH! Of course and I hate the raw taste! YUCK!
Cheated on my BF - I don't have one to cheat on

1 Person I Want To See Now - My Mum

I'm feeling tired, exhausted, cranky, sick and terrible. Its been very tiring to do this for the past few months and I think physically, I'm almost drained out yet mentally, I'm still strong. Praise God this is only for another month or 2, I wouldn't have to be superwoman for too long.

Miss my Jojo

Suddenly, its so quiet without Jojo around. He usually sends me an SMS or 2 every now and then. Jojo has already gone to Thailand for a holiday with his family. Hope he enjoys himself there though he seems to be hesitant about shopping. Auntie Mee Li will probably be in shopping paradise by now, with all the great bargains over there. I heard that accessories are value-buys there. Think I will go into a shopping frenzy when I reach there.

Jojo even suggested to get me FRIED INSECTS for a gift. I feel like a lizard when he wrote that SMS coz I don't really fancy that though it would be kinda cool to try it. Maybe I would go for the crunch "chicken-flavoured" thick white worm from Australia. That seems to be less gross than putting a fried grasshopper with 6 legs sticking out from the body. Eeewww.....

Hei! Jojo...Tell me about Thailand when you come back coz I'll be going there on Dec 11 - 13 to become a spy and investigator....cool right my job. Hahaha...

Pre-Event Me!

This is me at the end of the day. No more nicely blown hair, make up has already melted by now, a thick layer of facial oil (probably enough to fry an egg), watery eyes with puffy bags, slightly deranged etc....you get the picture-lah. Now, I'm just adding the finishing touches to the PR materials of the Media Preview of Teen Titans Go! scheduled for tomorrow morning.

Just saw the Teen Titans perform their musical. Starfire can really shake her booty while Beast Boy is cheekily naughty. Not that impressed with Robin though. His character doesn't stand out just as much as the other two but I really have to credit them for their dancing skills. Must be sweltering hot to wear those mascot costumes for such a long time and dance, too.

I'm just going to retire for the night... after driving home, removing make-up, bathe, facial, iron and prep my clothes for tomorrow. This is going to be a long long night.

Zombies

What do you get when you leave the office at 11pm each night and punch in at 9am the next day? Do this every day for 2 weeks and then, add in the final punch by leaving the office at 2am and coming back to work before 7am for the launch? You get zombies...check out our tiny eyes on the day of the launch of Sunway Pyramid's Expansion Plans.

We look SMART in our black suits - The Hot Ladies of Sunway Pyramid and ahh...Doreen (Darren), too.

This is specially for the PR Team

10 Nov - Only a handful of PR Team-mates called to wish me birthday greetings. I admit I was a little disappointed by my guess was that everyone was busy. Even my male Edmund forgot my birthday but I received his MMS about 4-5 hours later on 11 Nov. So, he did remember. Just that it was a little late.

14 Nov - Tonight was supposed to be Ida and Edwin's farewell dinner but I received SMS from Tabby and Shobbie saying that they want to be included in the pressie and cake. Mozli called me to say the same. Was there going to be a farewell cake? Then again, Bernard had called earlier to say that this dinner was also to celebrate the Nov babies. So, this is getting confusing for me. It was planned to be a farewell but it seems that the whole planning process has another planner. To confirm my suspicion and confusion, Darren tried to delay me from going up to Jack's Place.

By the way, Shi Han - I heard you saying, "We all pretend that we don't remember OK" from the entrance of Jack's Place when I walked in.

Needless to say, I was very surprised (still) and touched to find out that the farewell awas also a birthday celebration. THANK YOU for a lovely time and LOVE YOU gals and guys for taking the effort and time to share this memorable night.

What started out as a working relationship has blossomed into more firm friendship which I truly appreciate. Having each one of you in my life has made work more enjoyable and memorable. In fact, I look forward to every PR meeting and function because of each of you.

Here's a thank you message for each of you:

Edmund (My Male No 1)
My "Chi-Mui" who listens to all my sob stories and still stand by me no matter what. Even though I was screaming and making a big fuss over you forgetting my birthday, you are still my male no 1. Muaks!

Darren (Partner in Crime ala Britney Spears ala Doreen)
The best working partner anyone can ask for. You have been a great buddy, girlfriend and teacher. Also, you do a great job at curling hair!

Bernard (The Other Slut who waited with me outside the Male Toilet)
The most professional event organiser and emcee I know. PR Team will not be the same without your TRULY WITTY SARCASM!

Sharzede (Our Big Momma)
The best boss anyone of us can ask for. Thank you for being there for us. YOU ROCK!

Hyma (The One with the Super Long Legs)
Even though we have only known each other for about 4 months, its been a pleasure to be your friend and looking forward to more fun times together

Eileen (My Sweetie Girl)
Girl! Your sweet smile always lightens my heart so keep on smiling and thank you for being a great counselor.

Shi Han (Who thinks I'm Roslinda)
Aiyoh! Dah lah pekak and blink, cannot even remember my name. Hancur-lah. Since you merajuk because I didn't write more for you, here's your a longer message for you - the LOUDEST person in the PR Team who is like a blur sotong at times. If not blur, then absent-minded lah..always losing your mobile, keys, wallet or card holder. Anything else you want to leave behind? If you are not losing your things, then you can't seem to find your car. Habis-lah like that. How to date girls-lah!

Tabby (The One who conned me into wearing that me-malufying silver dress to NKF Dinner)
My steady pillar of calmness. Always so patient with me and yes, who am I supposed to tell that you wanted to be part of the pressie for me? Hehe

Vanessa (My Mummy To-Be)
Sweet, sweet mummy who makes maternity wear so fashionable. I've gotta start learning fashion tips from you so that I can be prepared (just in case lah)

Mozli (The Hopping Grasshopper)
Its incredible how your quietness can be so loud. Without you around, I miss ya. I love the way you can't be bothered with Bernard's teasing. Sudah numb-ified.

Jaclyn (JLo)
The cool girl who makes hotel-ing such fun. Service with a smile - that is her motto! :)

Edwin (The One who Never Fails to Surprise)
My sarcastic and smooth Edwin. This was supposed to be your farewell party and it turns out to be a surprise for me instead. Thank you for the heart and adorable bag. Your heart is now proudly sitting in front of me right now. I'm going miss you...sob sob...sniff sniff...

Ida (Cutie Pie)
My cutie from Theme Park is leaving me...:(...no more shooting tours together. No more ushering together. No more hair fashion statements anymore (I love the way you tie your hair differently each time I see you). But we will always keep in touch ya!

Susan (My Church Mate ala PR Team Mate)
Looks like we will be working real close together on the coming Teen Titans project. You are not so quiet after all...hehe...Guys, she can really chat!

Rita (Blur Blur Rita)
My roomie @ Pavilion. Looks like sharing the shower will not be a problem for us right? Hehe..

Norman (Dancing King)
Next time you want to take off your top to pose under the waterfall, remind me to not to bring children around...CENSORED!

Shobie (My Drama Queen who makes accessories so FASHIONABLE)
I'm always so fascinated with your accessories. So many variety! The coolest and fun-niest gal in SunMed.

Thank you once more for a memorable birthday...

Male No 1's Birthday

This is male No. 1's birthday on 8 September and we were at his house enjoying yummy food. The chicken curry and mee siam is a killer. Our Eddie boy decided to come out in his shorts and T-shirt. Pakai-lah handsome a bit.

Edmund is a favourite 'Chi-Mui' of Fibi, Mel and myself. To him, we are his favourite "females" though it does make us sound a little animalistic to use that term but of course to him, it is a term of endearment. This is for you Edmund (for forgetting my BDAY!) I'm still upset over that!

(from left: Mel, Ida, Edmund, me and Shi Han)

Wedding PR Team

Meet the HOT & HAPPENING PR TEAM who were "volunteered" to be the ushers of our boss' daugther's wedding. All the guys look like they were attending their own wedding, in all their power suits. The girls of course, look glamourous!

Watermelon Lippy

Jojo was so sweet! He attempted to pass me my birthday present on 2 occasions even though I was so busy at work. That guy is SO SWEET! When I saw the present, I burst out laughing. Watermelon Lip Balm - After all the teasing I've done to him, he had to give me that. Haha...

It all came about when Jojo told me that he thinks that Watermelon Lip Gloss is SO COOL and I teased him about finding this out through kissing a girl who was wearing the lippy. I never quite stop teasing him about this and I guess he has the final laugh because he gave me 3 tubs of lip balm to last me for the whole entire year.

Mummy's plastic mango cake

Last Saturday, we celebrated Mummy's birthday with a mango covered vanilla sponge cake. Sigh, the mango cake looks amazing before cutting, like the ones you see in cookbooks. However, when Mummy tried to slice it, the mango layer peels off like a kind of plastic. It adheres stubbornly to the knife. After desperate attempts to save the mango layer, we have to be contented eating the sponge cake part only. Oh well, so much for a mango cake.

To Mum,
You are my invisible strength. Like an Ethiopian jewel, your beauty and grace inspires me each day. Thank you for persisting through the difficult moments, you are an epitome of a perfect mother. I am blessed because of you.

Anime: Air Gear

Imagine extreme roller blading sport going up a new notch where riders can fly in the sky. In a sense, not exactly fly like a bird, just way better cuz you get to flip and twist and make 360 degrees turns while in the air. Air Gear starts with Ikki-kun discovering AT (air treks = roller blades with motor, cool eh) after watching Simca (a pink hair babe who got all the guys drooling). His learning process and obvious flying talent were chronicled in this manga. While Ikki-kun's stunts and childish character will keep you glued to the pages, there are many more unusual characters that will pique your interest e.g. Akito/Agito (shown in the above pic) is ultra kawaii when he swears (don't imitate him though), Bukka-kun (keeps a pool of blood in his stomach, huh???), Crossaint Mask (she is an original, haha). Ringo, the spectacled girl is in love with Ikki-kun is very good with AT too. You go, girl! There are roads and 8 kings in the world of AT. As you can guess, Ikki-kun is destined to be one of the kings. The question is will he be the ultimate Sky King beating all the rest of Fang King, Thunder King, Thorn Queen etc?

Continuous Assessments (aka Tests) Festival

I am pretty much stressed right now and blogging to relieve it. So, bear with me.

Precedent to the Nobel Laureates exhibition later this month, NUS is having its unofficial Continuous Assessments Festival this month. All students, including me, are experiencing a new level of high with its programme line up. For some of my peers, it is the multiple projects mixed with a few tests. For me (and majority of the NUS population), we are struggling with 1-3 tests weekly. Last week, I had Jap test. This week, I had FNA test and now I will burn midnight oil for the tough Immunobiology tomorrow. To add the fun, I have my weekly Jap and FNA tutorials, Technoprenuership readings, Microbiology reports to be finished. Adding to that, I must do my TR project (completed last week, thankfully) and FNA project on Creative financial statement. Next week, it will be Microbiology test and after that, Pharmacology test. I am positive that my Jap oral test will be next.

Good thing, there are also three marriages and many birthdays this month. Good occasions for releasing tension. Congrats, Willie and Wen Ci, Victor and Pey Pey, and Kaya and err...hubbie.
October is a happening month, I must say so.
